Psychodynamic Study of Heo Kyoon and His Novel, ¡¸Hongkildong Chon¡¹
Han Wou-Sang

Cho Doo-Young
Abstract
The famous Korean classic, ¡¸Hongkildong Chon¡¹ was written by Heo Kyoon, a politician and versatile man of letters whose stormy life spanned the 16th and 17th centuries during the Chosen dynasty. We evaluated the psychodynamics of his novel, ¡¸Hongkildong Chon¡¹ and his life on which his novel was based. As a child of a second wife, he lost his father early in life ; those he loved, he lost later. A a young man, he showed genius, and was generally known to be extremely knowledgeable as well as an excellent writer. He was, however, criticized for his haughtiness and arrogance, and though a good diplomat, failed to adjust as a government official because of his personal traits. His personality appears to have originated from his pathologic narcissism and deficient ego identity, as a man, he lacked confidence, and his troublesome personal development caused considerable psychological trauma and deficient object relationships ; his interpersonal relationships were thus poor, and he escaped from reality and devoted himself to writing. At a surface level, ¡¸Hongkildong Chon¡¹ expressed antigovernment opinion, but at a deeper level, the author revealed his personal conflict and narcissism. For Hongkildong and for Heo Kyoon, an underdeveloped ego identity was a common feature : in this novel, the writer expressed his own sublimated yearnings for what he has not accomplished in the reality.
